Queensland has officially launched its nomination pathway for the National Innovation Visa (NIV - Subclass 858). This permanent residency visa targets exceptional global talent in research, entrepreneurship, investment, sport, and the creative arts. As the state prepares for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games, the government is actively seeking individuals who can drive innovation and economic growth.

Why Choose Queensland?
Queensland offers more than just world-class beaches and a stunning lifestyle. It is currently undergoing a "once-in-a-generation" transformation. With major infrastructure projects, a booming innovation ecosystem, and strong ties to Asia-Pacific markets, the state is the ideal launchpad for high-growth ventures and careers.
Queensland nomination secures 'Priority Two' processing from Home Affairs, which can significantly accelerate your path to permanent residency.
Who is Eligible? The 5 Pathways
The Queensland Government is looking for talent in five specific sectors. To be nominated, you must meet both the Department of Home Affairs criteria and Queensland’s specific guidelines.
1. Global Researchers
Queensland wants top-tier academics and researchers who can elevate the state's international reputation.
The Requirement: You must have a high h-index relative to your career stage.
The Evidence: You need either:
A confirmed job placement at a Queensland university;
Confirmed funding (via grant or partnership) for a research placement at a Queensland institute for at least two years.
2. Entrepreneurs
If you are ready to commercialise a transformative product or service, Queensland wants you.
The Requirement: You must demonstrate operational readiness and a commitment to the state.
The Investment: You must have the capacity to make a minimum investment of AUD $1 million in Queensland within two years of the visa grant.
The Evidence: Proof of business growth, secured funding (VC, grants, or self-funded), and local engagement (e.g., employment contracts, MOUs with Queensland partners).
3. Innovative Investors
This pathway is for established investors with a track record of supporting successful, ground-breaking ventures.
The Requirement: A history of leading innovative ventures (VC, Private Equity, R&D).
The Investment: You must be ready to deploy a minimum of AUD $5 million into Queensland’s innovation ecosystem for at least two years.
The Strategy: You will need a well-developed investment plan focused on driving growth in the state.
4. Athletes and Sports Professionals
With the 2032 Olympics on the horizon, Queensland is recruiting elite sporting talent.
The Requirement: You must be an elite athlete, coach, or sports specialist (e.g., sports scientist) who can raise Queensland's profile.
The Evidence: International recognition, relevant accreditations (e.g., ESSA), and support from bodies like the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) or the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).
5. Creatives
Queensland is seeking artists and creatives who can boost the state's cultural capacity, particularly in technical production.
The Requirement: High-calibre talent contributing to the arts and cultural sector.
The Evidence: A strong portfolio, international awards, or a job offer/funding for creative commercial projects in Queensland.
The Application Process: How It Works
This is an invitation-only process. You cannot apply for the visa directly without being invited. Here is the Queensland nomination roadmap:
Check Eligibility: Ensure you meet the criteria for both Home Affairs and the Queensland Government.
Register Your Interest (ROI): Submit an ROI form to the Queensland Government.
Note: This is not a visa application; it is a request to be considered.
Invitation & Interview: A limited number of high-calibre candidates will be shortlisted for an interview with a Trade and Investment Commissioner.
Nomination (Form 1000): Successful candidates will receive a signed Form 1000. This form is critical—it serves as the nomination support for your Expression of Interest (EOI) to the Department of Home Affairs.
Visa Application: If Home Affairs accepts your EOI, you will be invited to apply for the Subclass 858 Visa.
