The National Innovation Visa (NIV) is Australia’s invitation-only, permanent residency pathway for the world’s most talented individuals. Replacing the Global Talent Visa, the NIV (Subclass 858) is designed to drive economic growth by attracting top-tier professionals, researchers, and entrepreneurs.
Who is this visa for?
Global Researchers: Experts with high-citation research.
Entrepreneurs: Those with scalable, innovative business models.
Investors: Leaders with a history of strategic investment in target sectors.
Top-tier Creatives/Athletes: Individuals with a global "stand-out" reputation.

Do you have what it takes to be invited? Here are the five key pillars of eligibility:
1. The "Invitation Only" Model
You cannot apply for this visa directly. You must first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI). Only those who receive an official invitation from the Australian Department of Home Affairs are eligible to lodge a visa application.
2. Internationally Recognized Achievement
This isn't for mid-level professionals; it's for leaders. You must demonstrate a sustained record of outstanding and high-caliber achievement in:
A profession or academia/research.
The arts or elite sports.
Your record must be "internationally recognized" as being at the top of your field.
3. Target Growth Sectors
Australia is looking for talent that aligns with national priorities. Your expertise should fall within sectors such as:
Technology & FinTech: Critical technologies and digital innovation.
Energy: Renewable energy and sustainability.
Science & Health: Health industries, biotech, and research.
Industry: Defense, space, agri-food, and resources.
4. The Nominator Requirement
To qualify, you must be nominated by a reputable Australian source. This can be:
An Australian organization with a national reputation in your field.
An individual Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.
A State or Territory government agency.
5. High Salary or Impact
You must prove your ability to contribute significantly to the economy, typically demonstrated by:
Income: A current or potential salary meeting the Fair Work High Income Threshold (currently AUD 175,000).
Research: For researchers, a high impact evidenced by significant publications and citations.
